P.G.A.
Synthetic absorbable polyglycolic acid surgical suture. PGA synthetic absorbable surgical suture is used for contact retention and soft tissue convergence, even in ophthalmic procedures. It is not indicated for use in cardiovascular and neurological procedures. After implantation of the PGA synthetic absorbable surgical suture, a moderate local tissue inflammation is observed, followed by gradual encapsulation in fibrous connective tissue.
This is followed by a gradual loss of strength and mass of the suture due to its absorption by means of the hydrolysis mechanism during which the polymer is broken down into glycolic acid which is absorbed and metabolized from body to body. During the absorption of the PGA suture there is initially a loss of strength without significant loss of mass. The PGA suture has a residual strength of more than 75% of the European Pharmacopoeia requirement at the end of the second week after implantation and more than 35% at approximately the end of the third week. Absorption of the suture is completed within 50 to 90 days.
